Abstract
A student who arrives to class prepared to learn and engages in the learning process through on-task behavior and class participation is exhibiting the broad indicators of behavioral engagement: attendance, participation, and behavioral incidents. Behavioral engagement has implications for academic achievement and behavior functioning, including dropout. Thus, it is imperative that schools intervene at the universal and individual levels (when necessary) to ensure behavioral engagement of students. This chapter explores the implications of behavioral engagement, through the lens of broad and specific indicators. As well, universal and individual interventions that align with each indicator are discussed.
