Nanotechnology in Skin, Soft Tissue, and Bone Infections

Abstract

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are chronic, non-healing complications associated with diabetes mellitus and these account for morbidity, mortality, poor psychosocial adjustment, and health care expenditures. The major risk factors which prevent the healing process of DFUs are diabetic neuropathy, peripheral vascular diseases, and abnormal immune responses. The chronic nature of DFU imposes an immense challenge to conventional treatments and has led to the emergence of nanotechnology-based therapeutics. The unique biological, chemical, and physical properties of nanomaterials make them to have significant applications to treat chronic diabetic ulcers. The current chapter is designed to discuss the nanotechnological approaches in treating chronic diabetic foot ulcers and its healing. The chapter specifically includes pathology of DFUs, standard of care, and the various nanomaterials with promises for chronic wound healing.
