Abstract

Many public health practitioners are deeply embedded in the work of ending the racial and ethnic health disparities gaps. But, it’s critical that legislators who can make or change laws that affect the many social determinants of health are aware of these gaps. How should public health practitioners gain the attention of lawmakers? Chapter 3 provides a legislator’s view with Senator Cynthia Creem’s “Notes from the Field” on the importance of hearing from constituents and how advocacy affects her work in the Massachusetts legislature. Additionally, readers will gain practical advice from former legislative staff member Stefanie Coxe, the owner of Nexus Werx LLC, an activism and lobbying training and consulting company.
