Revision Total Joint Arthroplasty

Abstract

Indications for implanting a total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) have recently expanded due in part to its use in the posttraumatic setting. Results of elbow arthroplasty have improved due to better implant characteristics and more precise and delicate surgical technique. However, revision rate after elbow arthroplasty is still higher when compared with other total joint replacements. Although there are no significant differences in revision rate between linked or unlinked designs, the reasons for revision are quite different. Periprosthetic fractures and infection may occur at any time and are not related to the type of implant. Infection is the main complication leading to revision during the first years after arthroplasty. In the long-term, aseptic loosening is the main cause of revision. Among all elbow replacements, there are some indications such as hemophilic arthropathy, primary osteoarthritis and posttraumatic osteoarthritis, which have higher revision rates.
