Abstract
This chapter will comprehensively explore the evidence base and underlying scientific rationale for artificial pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs). This will involve a discussion of the three main categories of artificial pacemakers and a broad overview of the pacing modes available, in addition to a comparison of single vs. dual chamber pacing. Then, the indications of ICDs in both the primary and secondary prevention of sudden cardiac death (SCD) will be examined, before we go on to explore the therapeutic potential of His bundle pacing and leadless pacemakers. In particular, this chapter will critically appraise several large studies, identifying the key factors to consider.
