Abstract
Heart transplantation remains the only curative option for advanced heart failure. Fifty percent of adult heart transplant recipients can now expect to live beyond 10 years. This chapter discusses complications immediately after surgery including hyperacute rejection, primary graft failure, infections and acute kidney injury. It also details the chronic complications that arise mainly from life-long immunosuppressive treatment, including infections, malignancy and cardiac allograft vasculopathy.
