Abstract
Significant bleeding is the most common surgical complication, occurring in up to 25% of all surgeries. Bleeding causes increased mortality and morbidity, by increasing the number of transfusions required, secondary to increased cumulative blood loss, and by causing hemodynamic instability. A solution to this issue encountered during surgery is the use of hemostatic products, tissue sealants, and adhesives. Worldwide, the number of topical adhesives, surgical sealants, and hemostats approved for use in the surgical setting is ever expanding. The objectives of this chapter are to review the spectrum of haemostats, sealants and adhesives products available in cardiovascular surgery and to provide an update on new products to be soon available, or in development, for reducing bleeding during surgical procedures.
