Abstract

Multirate digital filters are commonly used for filters with narrow transition bands or passbands but can be extended to more general cases. Typical applications of multirate filters are found in analog/digital and digital/analog conversion, communication systems, filter banks, transmultiplexers (converters between FDM and TDM systems), and delays with a fraction of the sampling period. Generally, in multirate filter, the filtering is shared between several simple subfilters operating at the lowest possible sampling rate. The design constraints for the subfilters are relaxed compared to a single-rate filter. As a consequence of the reduced design constraints, the effects of quantization and the arithmetic complexity are decreased. Note that the input and output sample frequencies are assumed to be the same. This chapter contains 9 solved examples.
