Reactionary Nationalists, Fascists and Dictatorships in the Twentieth Century

Part of the book series: Palgrave Studies in Political History ((PSPH))

Abstract

The paper examines some political and intellectual movements placed on the extreme right in several South American countries in the first decades of the twentieth century. It argues about the differences in the processes in these countries in relation to the European models of reference. The article thus takes distance from the historiographical currents that postulate uniformities and translate uncritically from vocabulary to European typologies without attention to differences. The text does not deny exchanges but argues about the native roots of authoritarian thought in Hispanic America and emphasizes the resignifying role of context. It is postulated in conclusion that the political cultures of the south have their own characteristics that cannot be ignored: they are mixture phenomena that specifically assemble ideas, prejudices and enemies.
