Abstract
This chapter begins the story of the concept of birth anxiety and fear, exploring how childbearing is documented through the ages, with relevance to the historical culture of birth and birth workers. The chapter will also discuss and explore what has influenced changes in maternity care provision and shaped society’s thinking about birth and its consequences for the women of today.
