Foundations of Behavioral Health

Abstract

This chapter highlights the concept of behavioral health within an overall framework of population or public health. It examines the burden of behavioral health problems on individuals and the general public, examines the difficulties and fragmented nature of existing behavioral health delivery systems, and emphasizes the importance of re-focusing behavioral health (the study of alcohol, drug abuse, and mental disorders from a population or public health perspective) on systems integration strategies which incorporate technology, facilitate recovery, and promote prevention.
