Dissociation and Dreams: Access to the Subconscious Mind

  • Chapter
  • First Online:

Abstract

During the nineteenth century and early twentieth century, different viewpoints were brought forward to explain the process of dissociation in dreams. A few perspectives were prescient, whereas others had major shortcomings. Viewed separately, the study of dreams and dissociation has a long history. Therefore, this study will be limited to the “in” of dissociation in dreams rather than the separate history of dreams and dissociation. Presented are the efforts of investigators in their proper historical context. The major emphases will be on how dissociation in dreams was understood by the leading figures in psychiatry and psychology, specifically in Europe and in the United States. The protagonists are examined for similarities and differences; where links of thoughts can be found, they will be described.
