Abstract
This chapter describes various definitions of “Sustainable Forest Management” and emphasises the importance of distinguishing between natural forests and tree plantation forests. It gives some examples of the problems that forest managers face in achieving sustainability in the long term and the difficulties that are encountered in balancing the short- and the long-term financial and technical considerations.
