Abstract
This chapter highlights the fundamentals of dermatologic surgery. These include important anatomic landmarks of the ear, nose and finger. The preoperative assessment is reviewed, including special circumstances such as when antibiotic prophylaxis is necessary or how to manage patients on anticoagulants or with implanted cardiac devices. The basic steps involved in performing an excision and closure are discussed, along with the characteristics of commonly used sutures and anesthetics. The benefits, limitations and indications for electrodessication and curettage, wide local excision and Mohs micrographic surgery are compared. Finally, commonly encountered complications are reviewed as well as how to manage them.
