Introduction to Interventional Procedures; Timing and Patient Selection

  • Chapter
Peripheral Interventional Management in Headache

Part of the book series: Headache ((HEAD))

Abstract

Patients with headache generally respond to medical treatments but the management can be challenging. Interventional treatments can be considered in: (1) refractory headaches with a poor response to pharmacologic management; (2) patients who develop side effects from the pharmacological regimen; (3) patients with significant comorbidities where the use of pharmacological treatment is not feasible; (4) patients with medication overuse headache, in order to stop analgesic overuse; (5) patients in the pregnancy or lactation period; (6) patients with headaches that need to be aborted; (6) cases that need bridge therapy; and (8) short-term prophylaxis of status migrainosus. Interventional procedures should be performed by specialized pain management physicians in experienced centers with emergency medical care.
