“Upright Realism”: The Influence of George Eliot on Polish Literature

Abstract

The paper explores the notion of literary reception by presenting the example of George Eliot and her reception in Poland. Budrewicz outlines George Eliot’s impact on selected nineteenth-century Polish realist writers: Bolesław Prus, Eliza Orzeszkowa, Józef Ignacy Kraszewski. She points out literary themes, as well as the cultural and philosophical fascinations shared by the writers. A range of similarities between the work of George Eliot and Eliza Orzeszkowa is discussed, for example their strong opinions related to the moral purpose of their work, the Jewish issue and “the woman question”. This article discusses some of these similarities, but also crucial differences between the texts as well as the sociopolitical context of Poland and Great Britain during the nineteenth century.
