Conduction Disorders and Permanent Pacemaker Implantation After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation

  • Chapter
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation

Abstract

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has been adopted rapidly as a minimal invasive therapeutic alternative to surgical aortic valve replacement for patients with severe aortic stenosis, who are considered inoperable or at high surgical risk. Several TAVI-related complications, e.g. paravalvular leakage, have decreased over time, which is not the case for the incidence of conduction disorders. On the contrary, the development of conduction disorders still is the most prevalent complication and probably is unavoidable as it is due to close anatomical relation between cardiac conduction system and aortic valvular complex. The most prevalent TAVI-induced conduction disorders are new-onset left bundle branch block and high-degree atrioventricular block requiring permanent cardiac pacing. This chapter provides a brief overview of different aspects of conduction disorders following TAVI such as incidence, risk factors, outcome and prognosis, as well as its management.
