Abstract

Networking is all about building relationships with others and subsequently looking for ways to maintain them. Like most scientists, you may not be a natural networker, but it is an important skill to master, if you ever want your career to take root and grow.

The goal of this chapter is to give you:

  1. 1.

Useful background information, discussing what networking is and its benefits

  2. 2.

Practical guidelines on how to develop a networking strategy that works for you

Key to being an effective networker is to adopt flexibility in your approach, so that you can develop the right strategy, to support your personal situation and circumstances. In this chapter, I will be presenting an effective networking strategy that has been previously developed by experts: the guerrilla networking strategy. I will also give you tips on how to network in the midst of a challenging work environment, i.e. when you need to deal with office politics.
