The Chiney Layered Pluton: Structure and Mineral Composition

World-Class Mineral Deposits of Northeastern Transbaikalia, Siberia, Russia

Abstract

The Chiney pluton is unique in distinct layering and rhythmic structure in Russia. It contains enormous vanadium resources (up to 30 Gt of ore) and PGE-Cu-Ni. The ores related to the Chiney intrusion differ from the ores of other Cu-Ni deposits in their high Cu/Ni ratio (~100). Its age is estimated as 1880–1850 Ma. It consists of the Western, Central, Eastern, and Southeastern blocks. Four main groups of intrusive rocks were recognized within the Chiney pluton, with two types of layering:(1) sharply bound isomodal layers, forming sandwiched leucocratic and melanocratic rocks (usually anorthosite and titanomagnetite gabbro and melagabbro), and (2) density-graded layers with titanomagnetite and/or pyroxene near the base. Maximum thickness of gabbro rocks has been estimated as 2.5 km. Internal structure and distribution of major components have been studied in the vertical sequence of the pluton. Composition of rock-forming minerals varies in separate rhythms but not in sequence.
