Von Neumann Architecture

Abstract

John von Neumann gave his name to what has become known as the von Neumann architecture that is used in almost all computers. It includes a central processing unit which includes the control unit and the arithmetic unit, an input and output unit, and memory. Eckert and Mauchly were working with him on this concept during their work on ENIAC and EDVAC, but their names were not included in the published draft report. This was due to their resignation from the University of Pennsylvania as they wished to protect their intellectual property on ENIAC and EDVAC and to commercialize their ideas with the formation of their own computer company.
