Abstract

Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease is a disorder of the immature hip in which there are necrosis and subsequent repair of the bone and marrow of the femoral capital epiphyseal ossification center accompanied by a variable amount of damage to the epiphyseal and physeal cartilage and by a range of secondary changes in shape and size of the articular cartilage, the epiphyseal model of the femoral head, the bone of the femoral head, the physeal cartilage, and the acetabulum. The structural changes of the femoral head and acetabulum at skeletal maturity can vary from near normal to highly irregular, the more severe of which predispose the hip to degenerative arthritis in later years.
