Abstract
This chapter analyses the individual status of a member of the European Parliament (MEP), dealing primarily with the European Parliament and MEPs through the European integration process, but also focusing on the legal regulation of the individual status of a member of the European Parliament.
The purpose of this chapter is to provide an analysis of the relationships between the European Parliament and an MEP in view of the law relating to the European integration process. In particular, the chapter will provide a unitary definition of the legal status of an MEP under EU law, and an overview of how this individual status has changed during the European integration process. Lastly, this chapter will answer the question of what role EU law played in developing the individual status of an MEP and whether the status of an MEP has a new function through the Lisbon Treaty.
