Abstract
A wide variety of benign diseases, from rare infections to commonplace polyps, occurs in the endometrium. Furthermore, since the uterus is a target organ for hormonal stimulation; morphologic changes involving the endometrium may reflect disorders in the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. The histologic changes are typically manifested by abnormal uterine bleeding, and an endometrial biopsy or curettage is commonly performed to control excessive bleeding or, more often, to determine its cause. The endometrial biopsy also continues to be an important and integral part of the infertility work-up. This chapter considers various benign conditions involving the uterus, with emphasis on the interpretation of endometrial biopsies and curettings. Congenital abnormalities of the uterus are also discussed.
