Abstract

Between a liquid metal and slag in contact with each other, there is always ion exchange, the existence of which has been shown experimentally [1]. The method of polarization of a metal in slag by means of alternating current [2] has been used to determine the rate of this exchange [3], and it has been shown that iron-base alloys exchange iron ions with the slag [4], while elements such as silicon and phosphorus participate in the exchange to a much lesser extent. Evidently this is because their binding energy [5] with the slag is fairly high.
