Abstract

In the chiton (Liolophura gaimardi) phagocytic cells are responsible for the removal of foreign material from the haemolymph (1). These cells occur as mobile cells in the haemolymph and are also found as fixed cells lining haemolymph spaces throughout the animal. The neuropedal sinus contains a spongy network of phagocytic cells which forms a phagocytic organ that filters haemolymph as it moves along these major haemolymph channels.
