Abstract
Technical advances in genitourinary surgery have led to an increased frequency of penile prosthesis placements to correct male erectile problems. A recent report estimated that more than 20,000 rigid and more than 1500 inflatable prostheses had been placed, mainly in the last 5–10 years.1 The surgical literature is extensive, and much has been written about technique, complications, and surgical outcome. On the other hand, relatively little besides “clinical impressions” has appeared in the literature about psychosocial outcome. In a thorough review of surgical outcomes, Sotile2 emphasized that almost all the published outcome data concerned objective function of the prosthetic device, and that considerably less attention had been paid to the subjective effects of surgery on the patient and his partner.
