Abstract

Two decades ago, Bazan (Bazan, 1970; 1971) demonstrated that ischemia and epileptic seizures are accompanied by lipolysis with accumulation of free fatty acids (FFAs), particularly stearic acid (18:0), arachidonic acid (20:4), and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6). These results were subsequently confirmed and extended by workers interested in ischemia (e.g., DeMedio et al., 1980; Yoshida et al., 1980; 1983; 1986; Rehncrona et al., 1982; Shiu et al., 1983; Abe et al., 1987; Ikeda et al., 1987) or epileptic seizures (Siesjö et al., 1982; Rodriguez de Turco et al., 1983; Reddy and Bazan, 1987). It was also demonstrated that extensive lipolysis with accumulation of FFAs occurs in hypoglycemia (Agardh et al., 1981; Wieloch et al., 1984) and in hypoxia (Gardiner et al., 1981).
