Abstract

The biogenesis of thylakoid proteins is a complex issue, since these proteins are encoded by two distinct genomes. Approximately half are encoded by chloroplast DNA and synthesised within the organelle, whereas the remainder are synthesised in the cytoplasm and post-translationally imported into the chloroplast. Imported proteins are initially synthesised as larger precursors containing aminoterminal pre- sequences ; in some cases, such pre-sequences have been shown to contain all of the information specifying transport into the chloroplast (reviewed in Keegstra, 1989; Smeekens, Weisbeek and Robinson, 1990).
