History in Adult Human Sexual Behavior with Children and Adolescents in Western Societies

  • Chapter
Pedophilia

Abstract

Though the theme of this book is adult human sexual behavior with children and adolescents, a number of other descriptive terms characterize individual chapters and, perhaps, their respective authors’ viewpoints: “pedophilia,” “cross-generational sex,” “adult/child sexual interactions,” “incest,” “man/child association,” “father/daughter sexual abuse,” “childhood sexual abuse.” Missing from the preliminary list of terms but present in some of the literature are other terms, such as “Knabenliebe” “boy-love,” “pederasty,” “Greek love,” and “child abuse.” Most of the terms in and of themselves are value free, except for the terms “child abuse” and “child sexual abuse,” and it is only in the last few decades that these terms entered the lexicon of descriptors. The question the historian has to raise is whether the emergence of these terms reflects a new and changing attitude or new and changing behaviors or both?
