Tumor Promotion in Skin

  • Chapter
Chemical Induction of Cancer

Abstract

The skin of rodents (especially of mice) is the oldest and until recently the most often used system for mechanistic studies on chemical carcinogenesis and for the bioassay of chemicals for carcinogenic activity. This is because this system provides special advantages such as the high sensitivity of the mouse skin to carcinogenic agents, the ease of manipulation, and the availability of different inbred mouse strains with graded susceptibilities. It is only relatively recently that the increasing use of other models such as the liver, the bladder, and a variety of cell and tissue culture systems has begun.
