Abstract

Social phobia, or social anxiety disorder (SAD), is defined in the DSM-IV as a marked and persistent fear of one or more social performance situations in which embarrassment may occur (APA, 2000). Exposure to unfamiliar people or possible scrutiny of others typically evokes anxiety and tends to be avoided or endured under great distress. In this chapter a stepped care approach to treatment is presented. Guided self-help and in particular Internet-based treatment is covered.
