Abstract
This work presents an efficient approach for the calculation of the MPEG-7 descriptor for motion activity from scalable-coded video sequences, which include scalable motion vectors and variable block sizes. We first describe the adaptation of the constant block-size assumption of the MPEG-7 descriptor to this new coding domain. Then we compare the results obtained with those for MPEG-1 videos in the context of a common application of this descriptor: video summarization. The comparable quality of these results and the gain in efficiency support the presented approach.
