About this book

This book is a collection of selected research papers presented at the 2024 5th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Education Technology (AIET 2024), held in Barcelona, Spain, on July 29 - 31, 2024. AIET establishes a platform for AI in education researchers to present research, exchange innovative ideas, propose new models, as well as demonstrate advanced methodologies and novel systems. It is a timely and up-to-date publication responsive to the rapid development of AI technologies, practices and their increasingly complex interplay with the education domain. It promotes the cross-fertilisation of knowledge and ideas from researchers in various fields to construct the interdisciplinary research area of AI in Education. These subject areas include computer science, cognitive science, education, learning sciences, educational technology, psychology, philosophy, sociology, anthropology and linguistics. The feature of this book will contribute from diverse perspectives to form a dynamic picture of AI in Education. It also includes various domain-specific areas for which AI and other education technology systems have been designed or used in an attempt to address challenges and transform educational practice.

Education stands as a cornerstone for societal progress, and ensuring universal access to quality education is integral to achieving Goal 4 of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The goal is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all by 2030. This involves not only expanding access to education but also improving the quality of education to promote lifelong learning opportunities. AI has the potential to significantly contribute to the achievement of Goal 4. It is committed to exploring how AI may play a role in bringing more innovative practices, transforming education, and triggering an exponential leap towards the achievement of the Education 2030 Agenda. Providing broad coverage of recent technology-driven advances and addressing a number of learning-centric themes, the book is an informative and useful resource for researchers, practitioners, education leaders and policy-makers who are involved or interested in AI and education.

About the editors

Prof. Dr. Tim Schlippe is a professor of Artificial Intelligence at IU International University of Applied Sciences and CEO of the company Silicon Surfer. He studied computer science at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and did his master's thesis at Carnegie Mellon University. After successfully completing his PhD at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Prof. Dr. Schlippe worked at Across Systems GmbH as a consultant and project manager for several years before founding the company Silicon Surfer. At Silicon Surfer, he develops AI-powered products and services that have social value, e.g., the WaveFont technology which automatically and intuitively visualizes information and emotion from the voice in subtitles and captions. Prof. Dr. Schlippe has in-depth knowledge in the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, multilingual speech recognition/synthesis, machine translation, language modeling, computer-aided translation, and entrepreneurship, which can be seen in his numerous publications at international conferences in these areas.

Prof. Dr. Schlippe’s current research interests are primarily in the fields of AI in Education, Natural Language Processing, and Subtitling/Captioning. As IU International University of Applied Sciences grows rapidly, especially in distance learning, he investigates innovative methods such as automatic short answer grading, conversational AI, and gamification, which are then used in practice at IU to provide optimal support to both students and teaching staff.

Prof. Eric Cheng is a Professor and the Vice President (Academic) of Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education, specializing in Knowledge Management and Lesson Study; he earned his Ed. D. in education management from the University of Leicester. His research investigates strategies for schools to optimize pedagogical knowledge assets for enhanced student learning and sustainable development. As a Principal Investigator, Eric has initiated over 20 research projects in Knowledge Management and School Improvement, securing competitive funding. He has published over 80 international journal papers, book chapters, and ten academic books.

Dr. Tianchong Wang is a Lecturer in STEM in Innovative Education Futures at the College of Education, Psychology, and Social Work, Flinders University. He holds an EdD from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, an MSc from the University of Hong Kong, and a BA from Hong Kong Baptist University, along with various ICT qualifications. Tianchong is an advocate for the Education 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and an active researcher focused on using digital technologies to enhance the quality and inclusivity of education. His research interests include AI in education, women in STEM, blended learning, ICT-enabled learning at scale, and digital learning for development. He has contributed to research projects commissioned by international organizations and has served as a consultant for UNESCO. Dr. Wang is also a passionate teacher educator, frequently appointed by development aid agencies as a resource person to lead teacher capacity-building activities in the Global South.
