About this book

This book follows the classical division of engineering mechanics as taught at universities in Germany and is devoted to strength of materials, i.e. the determination of stresses and of deformations in elastic bodies. The aim of this book is to provide students with a clear introduction and to enable them to formulate and solve engineering problems in this field. For this purpose, the book provides a number of examples.

This book is intended for university students of mechanical engineering, civil engineering, mechanics, but also all other courses in which the contents of this book play a role.

The Contents

Introduction to linear elasticity â€“ Plane stress state – Bars – Beams – Beam deflections – Shear stresses in beams – Torsion – Energy methods – Buckling of bars

About the author

Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Christian Mittelstedt, studied civil engineering at the University of Wuppertal, where he graduated as Dipl.-Ing. in 1999. He received his Dr.-Ing. degree from the University of Siegen in 2005 with a dissertation on stress concentration problems in composite laminates. From 2006 he worked in the German aerospace industry as a research engineer and from 2011 as a technical manager in the field of structural analysis. He habilitated in 2012 with a thesis on the stability of thin-walled fibre composite components in lightweight construction and is the author and co-author of more than 200 scientific papers published in international journals, conference proceedings, but also officially recognised calculation manuals. Since August 2016, he has been head of the department of "Structural Lightweight Design and Construction Methods" at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Darmstadt University of Technology.
