Estimates reveal that there are some 200 million heterozygous carriers of abnormal hemoglobins genes worldwide, and tens of thousands of severely affected patients. Effective application of imaging techniques is essential to combat the continuing development of the disease and to ensure risk-free follow-up of the chronically ill.
