About this book

Raimo Tuomela, late Professor Emeritus at the Centre for Philosophy of Social Sciences (TINT), University of Helsinki, is widely regarded as one of the most important philosophers of our time. He published extensively on various topics within social philosophy; particularly, on social action, cooperation, group belief, group responsibility, group reasoning, social practices, and institutions. To celebrate his legacy, this volume engages with and delves deeply into his philosophy of sociality. By gathering original essays from a world-class line-up of social ontologists, social action theorists, and social philosophers, this collection provides the first comprehensive and critical treatment of Tuomela's outstanding contribution to social ontology and collective intentionality.

Reviews

Over the course of forty years Raimo Tuomela first laid the foundations, and then developed a philosophical theory that has profoundly influenced current debates on social ontology. The energy, commitment, and care that he invested in this project are reflected and celebrated in a volume where friends of collective intentionality explore its implications and defend it from criticism, while sceptics identify the main challenges it faces. There is no better way to honour Tuomela's memory than this, and he certainly would have been delighted.
—Francesco Guala, Professor of Political Economy at the University of Milan, Italy

This welcome collection of essays focuses on Raimo Tuomela’s wide-ranging contributions to the philosophical debates on the nature of joint action and other central social phenomena. The essays helpfully combine exposition and constructive commentary on a variety of aspects of Tuomela’s work by experts in the field.

â€”Margaret Gilbert, Melden Chair in Moral Philosophy and Distinguished Professor of Philosophy, University of California, Irvine

Raimo Tuomela blazed a now well-trodden trail in his work on the significance and varieties of collective action. This set of essays offers, not just a deserved tribute to his pioneering achievement, but an insightful overview and appraisal of the many aspects of that work.

â€”Philip Pettit, L. S. Rockefeller Professor of Politics and Human Values, Princeton University and Distinguished Professor of Philosophy, Australian National University
