About this book

This book examines the economic theories and policies that underline the governance of the European Union. Through exploring the history of European economic governance and how this framework has evolved over time, it contextualises theoretical influences, policy debates surrounding the European Union and its instruments of governance, including the European Semester, Six Pack, Two Pack, and Fiscal Compact. Forthcoming reforms to fiscal rules and the economic policy architecture of the European Union are also discussed, with a particular focus on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This book aims to give readers a broad understanding of the framework and dynamics that define European economic governance. It will be relevant to researchers and policymakers interested in the European political economy.

Reviews

“The book is first and foremost an original and propositional reflection on the past and future of the European integration process … . I highly recommend his fascinating book.” (Alexandre Mendes Cunha, History of Economic Thought and Policy, Issue (2), 2023)

“To many, the structure of European economic governance may seem like the Minotaur labyrinth of Knossos. Fabio Masini, in this nice little volume, provides an overview of its growth and helps us better understand both its logic and its limitations.”

Ivo Maes, Robert Triffin Chair, University of Leuven, Belgium

"This book by professor Fabio Masini provides the reader with an accurate and comprehensive overview of European economic governance: the rationale behind it, the technical as well as the historical reasons which explain what works in Europe, what does not and what is still lacking. It is an interesting and enlightening volume whose clarity is enhanced by the style and  by the author's goal to reach a wide audience"

Susanna Cafaro, Full professor of EU Law at Università del Salento, Italy
