Introduction

This text provides a comprehensive overview of applied underwater acoustics which will be of value to students, researchers and engineers interested in exploiting sound transmission in the sea for scientific or technical purposes. In addition to covering the basic topics of sound propagation in the sea, and the modelling of transmission in both deep and shallow sea conditions, the author also provides an introduction to transducer design and the use of arrays of transducers to establish preferred propagation patterns. Particular features of the book are the inclusion of a chapter on the engineering of acoustic systems and a chapter on underwater acoustic communication, topics of increasing importance as greater interest is focused on scientific data gathering from the sea.
