Characterization of a photosynthetic microbial solar cell with a membrane electrode assembly

Abstract

We studied the photosynthetic microbial solar cell (PMSC), which is one of the sources of renewable energy. In order to increase the power output of the PMSC, we fabricated a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) by either spin coating or hot pressing with a Pt catalytic layer, whose thickness was changed depending on the fabrication method. The PMSC with MEA fabricated by hot pressing with a thick Pt layer showed higher power output than that fabricated by spin coating with a thin Pt layer. The effectiveness of the fabrication method and the correlation between the Pt thickness and the maximum power output of the PMSC were explained by using the triphase boundary theory and were verified experimentally using energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) line scans across the MEA cross sections.
