Abstract
Two experiments investigated the influence of light and dark adaptation on forced-choice target detection under conditions of metacontrast. U-shaped masking functions were found under both adaptation conditions. The U minimum occurred at shorter Δt values under dark adaptation than under light adaptation. Light adaptation increased target detection under some conditions.
