Abstract
Subjects stored circular sequences of letters and digits in memory. There were three types of sequence: ordered (0), backward (B), and arbitrary (A). Printed stimuli from a sequence were presented, and S transformed a stimulus by writing the item in the sequence T (=0,1,2) steps away from the stimulus. Results indicated that response time was an approximately linear function of transformation size. This finding is consistent with a metered memory search process that is serial and self-terminating. The search rates obtained suggest implicit speech as the scanning mechanism in the search process.
