Abstract
Albino rats with either bilateral hippocampal lesions, neocortical lesions, or no lesions were allowed to explore either a Hebb-Williams open field or a Lashley III maze. All animals subsequently learned the maze for a water reward. Normal and neocortically-lesioned rats allowed to explore the maze before training made fewer errors than those allowed to explore the open field. Rats with hippocampal lesions did not display such latent learning, despite greater than normal exploratory behavior.
