The Effect of Using Ceramic Cutting Tools for Turning Thermoplastic Polymer Materials

  • Published:
Russian Engineering Research Aims and scope

Abstract

The article assesses the effectiveness of turning polymeric materials with ceramic cutting tools. It is experimentally proven that turning caprolon and fluoropolymer using a cutting tool insert made of KNT16 cermet results in higher quality of the machined surface. The roughness parameters of a surface machined with a cermet cutting insert are lower than when turning with an insert made of VK8 tungsten–cobalt alloy, and the chips formed are of a different type.
