Structural Changes in Electric Discharge Machining by Dissimilar Tool Electrodes

  • Published:
Russian Engineering Research Aims and scope

Abstract

The structure of the machined surface after the copy electric discharge machining (broaching) of quenched 40Х steel by various tool electrodes is investigated. The tool electrodes consist of copper, graphite, or a copper–graphite composite. The influence of the machining conditions and the properties of the tool electrodes on the structural changes at the machined surface is established. The change in microhardness observed close to the machined surface is due to the thermal influence of the electrical discharge process. The depth of the thermal-influence zone may vary within the range 300–320 µm, depending on the machining conditions and the material used in the tool electrode.
