Abstract
An energy approach to the mathematical description of the nonlinear dynamics of surface smoothing is proposed. The analysis reveals a nonlinear dynamic core in the system that identifies the oscillatory interaction of the smoothing tool’s indenter with the surface. A multiple-sheet phase portrait of the nonlinear dynamics of elastic smoothing is created and, on that basis, the boundaries of dynamic stability of the system are determined.
