Abstract
The results of long-term oceanographic observations at shallow depths near the northeastern and northern Sakhalin edge are presented. It is shown that the near-shore upwelling can be produced by along-shore southerlies and tidal events. Upwelling on the northern Sakhalin shelf is also a consequence of southerlies, but on the lee shore. Temporal and spatial scales of the phenomenon depend on the wind strength and duration. Northern winds are capable of producing opposite phenomenon, downwelling, when warm and freshened water fills the near-shore zone.
