Abstract
Interaction of lime- and gypsum-containing ameliorants and their combinations with sorption complex in the illuvial horizon of sod-podzolic soil have been studied under dynamic conditions. The core role of hydroxyl ions, which are formed in the process of CO 2-3 hydrolysis, in removal of various forms of acidity by lime-containing ameliorants has been demonstrated. The ions of calcium (magnesium) become exchangeable in place of neutralized ions of hydrogen and precipitated ions of aluminum in the sorption complex. As gypsum interacts with acidic soil, the main process is fixation by its solid phase of aluminum ions with sulfate and hydroxyl ions involved. A small portion of aluminum ions in the form of water-soluble complexes with sulfate ions moves to deeper layers with infiltrating moisture. The reduction of soil acidity has also been found in layers deeper than the ameliorant application layer, and its higher values have been observed at their complex use.
