Contact of surfaces under small tangential displacements

Abstract

Currently available approaches to the description of the contact of real engineering surfaces under the effect of normal and tangential forces are considered. The description of original results is preceded by a brief review of publications, mainly by Russian authors. The influence of the microtopography of the surfaces in contact on the normal and tangential flexibilities of contact is analyzed using an original model. It has been shown that the values of the normal and tangential flexibilities of contact are close. Recommendations for selecting a method of surface machining to reduce the contact flexibility are made.
