Abstract
Gas depletion results in shrinkage of the coal bed and hence in distortion of the stress–strain state near the face. The swelling of the coal is plotted against its yield of volatiles (its coalification). By randomization of the data, the shrinkage of the coal is expressed as a function of two variables: its yield of volatiles and its methane capacity. Knowing the gas depletion at the face and the dependence of the bed shrinkage on its methane capacity, we describe the variation in bed thickness as a function of the distance from the face.
