Abstract

In 1960, in the COSMIC RAYS Laboratory at the Crimean Station of the Lebedev Physical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, an installation was developed for the first time, intended to search for local sources of cosmic particles, i.e., high-energy primary photons in a given direction by Cherenkov radiation in air from extensive air showers caused by them. The search was performed against the night airglow in moonless and cloudless nights. The system could be directed to any sky point (visible at a given observation level) where a possible source is arranged. Various arrival directions from individual space objects at photon energies of ~1013 eV were investigated. The experiment laid the foundation of wide application of such detectors.
